Gowns are used by healthcare professionals as a part of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a protective barrier between infected patients and professionals. They are used to protect the wearer from getting infected or contaminated by potentially infectious liquid or materials. Furthermore, they are also used to prevent the wearer from transferring microorganisms to vulnerable patients or patients with a weakened immune system.
FDA has divided gowns into multiple categories based on various tests and performances. These standards are set in order to make the users aware when to use a particular gown. These standards include – liquid barrier performance (levels 1-4), tensile strength, tear resistance, seam strength, etc.
The gowns are breathable and comfortable in use. Also, the level of heat generated due to the extra clothing layer is less for gowns as compared to coveralls. Gowns provide efficient protection to the wearer against exposure to infected patient’s blood, body fluids, and other harmful pathogens.
Note: Remember to perform proper hand hygiene before and after removing PPE.
